Sacred Cenote

The Sacred Cenote was thought to have life sustaining powers, and that this natural well was a gift from the Gods. Its water was all important to the Mayans, who believed the life sustaining water required sacrafices, sometime human, in order to remain potent. Jewels and ornaments were hurled in to the cenote as well. On rare occasions, the victims thrown into the well survived, they were thought to bring back messages from the Gods
